Wisdom teeth extraction is a surgical procedure that is done when the wisdom teeth in the mouth cause pain or can lead to damage of nearby teeth. Once the procedure is over, there are a few things the patient has to do to avoid unnecessary pain and complications.
Aftercare instructions following wisdom teeth extraction
After the wisdom teeth have been extracted, these tips should help with the healing process:
People who undergo wisdom teeth extraction should expect some swelling after the surgery. This can be reduced by applying ice packs to the outside of the mouth intermittently for up to two days. If there was an infection prior to the extraction, the dentist will recommend using a warm compress instead of an ice pack.
There will be some bleeding after the procedure. That is why the dentist will recommend applying a gauze pad over the extraction site for at least 30 minutes after surgery. If the bleeding is heavy, the dentist will recommend biting down on a gauze pad or placing fingers over the pad for 30 minutes before removing it.
After the bleeding has stopped, the dentist will suggest drinking luke-warm water to rehydrate. The patient will be limited to soft foods like oatmeal, mashed potatoes, eggs and pudding for the first few days before moving on to a regular diet.
Foods and liquids should be limited for the first few hours after the wisdom teeth extraction. The patient should also avoid rinsing out their mouth vigorously or using a straw while drinking to prevent the blood clot from dislodging. Patients are permitted to brush their teeth at night after the surgery, but they have to avoid the surgical area and should rinse their mouth gently to avoid dislodging the blood clot.
If the patient smokes, they have to avoid cigarettes as long as there is still some bleeding in the mouth to prevent an infection.
There will be some pain after the procedure, but the intensity varies for most people. The dentist will prescribe painkillers to be used as directed to help with the pain. Since the medication will likely make the patient groggy, they are advised to stay at home and avoid operating heavy machinery and driving. Patients should also avoid drinking alcohol after surgery.
The worst of the pain usually lasts for up to 48 hours after the surgery and will subside daily until the patient is pain-free. If the pain persists, the patient should contact the dentist immediately.
There will be some nausea or vomiting after the surgery, but there is no need to panic because those are side effects of the IV sedation, general anesthesia and pain medication. To avoid throwing up after surgery, patients are advised to avoid ingesting anything for at least an hour after surgery.
Wisdom teeth extraction can help relieve the pain caused by wisdom teeth that did not erupt properly. However, these tips should help ease the pain after the surgery and get you back on your feet.
