Best Ways to Care for a Toothache

A toothache can leave you feeling miserable all day and unable to sleep at night. For some reason, toothaches always seem to strike at the worst times possible. One of the most common symptoms associated with toothaches is the pain.

Other common toothache symptoms include:

  • Inflammation of the gums around the tooth

  • Sensitive gums

  • Sensitive teeth

  • Throbbing pain

  • Sharp pain from a specific location

A toothache is often a symptom of a more serious issue such as tooth decay. If left untreated, the decay will continue until the pain reaches a point you can no longer ignore it. Generally speaking, the longer you wait to address dental issues like tooth decay, the more expensive it will be to treat it. Toothaches can also include a fever, difficulty breathing and swallowing. In some cases, people may also experience a weird-tasting discharge from the tooth. These are signs that you have a serious oral disease that needs immediate treatment.

Dealing with an awful toothache?

Here are a few things you can do to alleviate the pain before your dental appointment.

1. Salt and hot water

These are two items you likely have in your home at all times, and it can give you some relief from toothaches. This solution will draw out the fluids that are irritating your gums and reduce the sensation of pain.

Mix a tablespoon of salt with hot or warm water. Then rinse your mouth with it. Repeat as necessary until the pain starts to go away.

2. Ice

Ice or cold compresses are commonly used for pain relief. Just place the ice or compress directly on the part of your mouth the pain is coming from.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

People can use hydrogen peroxide by itself or mixed with water. It works similarly to the way saltwater solution does. Just rinse or gargle with it and spit it out.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol is a great way to numb tooth pain. Swishing strong alcohol like brandy, scotch, and whiskey around your mouth will kill germs and numb the area around your tooth. For extended relief, soak a cotton ball in alcohol and apply it directly to your area the pain is coming from. Using alcohol for pain relief is not recommended for anyone under the legal drinking age.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also acidic, so it kills the bacteria that are responsible for your toothache. The best way to use apple cider for pain relief is to soak a cotton ball in it and press it directly against the tooth that is causing you pain.

6. Peppermint

Peppermint contains chemicals that reduce soreness and swelling. You can use many things that contain peppermint for pain relief. For example, you can chew on fresh peppermint leaves or hold them against your tooth. You can also soak a cotton ball in peppermint extract and smear in on your affected tooth.

You can even make peppermint tea with dry leaves and hot water. Just swish it around your mouth for pain relief.
